os. a network ahead. one year later the shooting that claimed six lives and changed the lives of so many others in tucson, arizona is being remembered. as the congresswoman continues her fight to recover, those who gathered called for a chance for everyone to heal. good evening, thanks for joining us, i'm maureen umeh. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords returned to the scene where she was shot in the head. she and her husband went to the grocery store where she and dozens of others stood the day a gunman opened near. this was the -- opened fire. this was the only memorial she explained. she doesn't want to be the

focus of the day. >> it's not good gabby. it's about the six individuals that died a year ago today. it's a sad event. it's a marker in time. it's important to acknowledge what happened and for the community to get together. >> the suspect, jared loughner pled not guilty to 49 charges connected to the shooting. he is under psychiatric treatment so he can stand trial. hundreds packed into a cathedral for memorial service honoring the six that did die. we will bring you more on fox 5 news at 10:00. police are investigating a shooting in prince george's county. this happened around 5:00 this morning on 28th avenue in temple hill. police say a man was shot in what appears to stem from an attempted break in. he is expected to survive but it's not clear whether he was the suspect or the victim. gun sales in virginia hit a record high in 2011 when

shoppers buying more firearms in december than ever before. according to the richmond times dispatch, mandatory criminal background checks on gun buyers show more than 320,000 gun transactions last year. more than 32,000 were in december alone. that is up 16 piers from the year before. it's the second largest percentage increase in a decade. d.c. police trying to get to the bottom of several frightening robberies in northwest last night. in every case the suspect walked up to the victims. take a look at this map. the first happened around 10:30 in the unit block of kennedy street. the robber fought with the victim before getting away with her purse. then a half hour later two people were robbed in the 70 block of rock creek church road. three suspects in that incident -- there were three suspects. one had a gun. just before midnight, in the 70 block of newton place, two people were robbed by two suspects. one had a gun. it is not clear yet whether the

against people who want them out of power. in the last two weeks, 450 people died in the clashes between the people and the military sanctions fighting to keep the president in power. the government still has the upper hand. >> reporter: several civilians have been killed in government raids throughout syria. the exact number killed today isn't exactly clear. syrian forces attempted to break up antigovernment protests in damascus by firing water canyons in the crowd. the amateur video shows demonstrators being beaten and dragged into a police car. in other parts of syria, they chanted against a regime. syrian president as sad's security forces said they would crush the rebellion with an iron fist after 26 people were killed in a suicide beaming attack friday in the heart of damascus. thousands attended the funerals, some holding pictures

of as sad. it's not clear who is behind the attacks. at least seven people were killed this weekend in clashes with security forces adding to the more than 5,000 dead since the violence started last march. arab league observers looking into the situation in syria found themselves trapped between antigovernment groups and the army. meanwhile, in he gyp, crowds gathered outside of the arab league headquarters demanding action be taken against the regime. arab league monitors met in kai i don't. they decided that the monitors will continue working in syria and urged all parties to stop the violence immediately. something that is unlikely to happen. in jerusalem, rina, ninan, fox news. the monitors are supposed to make sure that syria complies with a government to end the crackdown on protestors. syria agreed to the plan last month. riders on metro had a plan this morning to wake you up.

confrontation at school. they learned the boy was holding a pellet pistol. he was shot twice. no one explained why he had the pellet gun but he did, rather, have a history of trouble. a bungee jump caught on camera in australia went horribly wrong. miraculously the jumper survived. he is jumping in victoria falls when the rope snapped sending her plunging 65 feet into the river. she lost consciousness and woke up in the water and struggled against the rapids in the river. >> went black straightaway. i felt like i was slapped all over. i had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out. >> she reportedly spent a week in the hospital but was not seriously injured in the fall. an organized mission to metro to make people smile. it's the fourth year a large

resort and feel the city's policy regarding applicants to give fingerprints makes them feel worse. >> what does fingerprints have to do with hunger. >> reporter: governor cuomo agreed and says the policy should come to an end adding it may be keeping people from applying at all. >> i understand fraud detucks. i understand fingerprinting but don't make a child go to bed hungry. >> reporter: a public advocate is joining the effort and collecting signatures calling on the mayor to make a change. >> this mayor doesn't understand that a lot of people are struggling in the city. it's out of touch with the people that he is supposed to serve. >> reporter: mayor bloomberg said taking someone's finger image is not a stigma and argued it's a valuable tool in preventing fraud. >> he is absolutely right that this is a simply and easy process that has helped us prevent fraud and waste and abuse. >> reporter: supporters say the city has the highest percentage in the state of people

good thing he has fur. i got to say -- gwenn, i thought it would be chilly. >> we were 16 degrees cooler than we were saturday when we hit almost 70-degree day of 68. unbelievable. we have been spoiled. but we did well today. let's take a look outside. beautiful shot of the national cathedral. we have, you know, a few clouds out there tonight. it's not all bad. we have a ridge of high pressure in control. that is at the top of our weather headlines tonight. that ridge of high pressure is holding us steady and will do so as we go through the course of tonight and tomorrow. the week is starting mild. we will be in the 50s. we have rain in the forecast. as we move through the later part of the week, by the weekend we have a cool down heading our way. it will be cooler than it was yesterday to today. so, 52 degrees. 16 difference from the 68 high saturday. 50 at dulles.

we hit 51 at bwi. we are still above where we should be, by 10 to 11 degrees. we should be only in the low 40s. here is where we stand in terms of the current temperatures. a chilly 37 at gaithersburg. 34 at frederick. 41 martinsburg. we have 44 at baltimore and 46 at annapolis and 45 to the south in fredricksburg. 39 for boston, the same for new york. cooler. and a few 20s to the west. that's where the cooler air is settling in. if you take a look at the national map, the real variance, the warmer air is hugging down the gulf coast area. temperatures are on the cooler side with the jet stream and the cooler air moving in from the north. satellite and radar composite, we have clouds. we will see a few cloudy skies during the course of tonight. high pressure ridge is in

control. it will keep most of the clouds at bay. tonight, temperatures will be in the 30s. a little chilly. low 30s everywhere. 29 in frederick. be prepared if you are heading out that you have a good jacket. a ridge of high pressure in control. this is the system that will push its way in across from the south and start to gradually head its way up the eastern seaboard. as it does for tomorrow, it will set up for a chance of light showers, primarily to the south of the d.c. region. i can't rule out that we won't get any. i put it in the forecast that we could see a light shower or two. a stronger system that will bring wet weather by wednesday. a tenth or less than that. by the time we get to wednesday, we could see an inch of rainfall in the local areas where we get heavier rainfall hitting through. then by the end of the week, we will clear out again and here is a look at futurecast for tomorrow. we have a few showers edging their way into the 5:00 hour. then they are out of the way by the time we hit into the later

part of the evening. cool and cloudy. could see a shower or two pop up. not all of you will see it. light, scattered here and there. we put it in the forecast for you. by midday around 49 degrees. so, tonight then, mostly cloudy skies and chilly. temperatures in the low 30s. could see upper 20s out there. 34 in the city. light northeasterly flow from 10 to 5 miles per hour. tomorrow mostly cloudy. light showers are possible. not everyone will get it. keep your umbrella handy. 47 degrees and easterly to southerly wind at 5 miles per hour. the heavier rainfall on wednesday. five-day forecast, temperatures are starting to rise as well. we will get back to the 50s. tomorrow chillier at 47. then we climb into the 50s once again. by hump day wednesday, when we get the heavier rainfall, 54 and then we go the opposite direction. into the weekend friday, we are in the upper 30s. overnight lows by saturday

talents in the bach 2 rock battle of the bands. they get a chance to work with professionals and record an album in a state of the art recording studio. did you hear? , it's a girl for super couple beyonce and jay-z. she gave birth last night at new york's lennox hill hospital. they allegedly rented out the entire fourth floor so she could deliver in peace. the baby's name, blue ivy carter. the falcons and giants battling. a lot of patients are using toothpaste to clean their dentures. you really want to be careful, you can't use something as abrasive as a toothpaste because it will cause scratches. as a result of those scratches, bacteria will get lodged in that denture and as they multiply in the mouth the odor can get stronger. i always advise my patients to use polident.
